Going “beyond the conventional” is what Wee Urban prides itself on. Based out of Canada, the company’s Cozy Basics sleep bag is a medium weight sleep sack that’s suitable for all seasons. While it doesn’t do everything perfectly, the best in class double zipper is something other brands should look to copy. If you’re looking for a little more modern/trendy styling by a company that makes a commitment to the environment, the Cozy Basics sleep sack definitely has good potential. While you may never have heard of Wee Urban before, they are quickly gaining a loyal following.
Material and Warmth
As a medium weight sleep sack, with a TOG rating of 2.0, the Wee Urban can be used through all four seasons as long as you dress your baby/toddler properly underneath for the temperature (ex: onsie in the summer and warm PJs in the winter). The pre-shrunk cotton blend (80% cotton 20% recycled polyester) is breathable and feels similar to a comfy sweatshirt. Good for any region except maybe those in the warmest southern states.
The Cozy Basics sack is available in three sizes (0-6 months, 6-18 months, and 18-36 months). Sizes run true to size for the most part but longer than most on the bottom which makes it a good choice for longer babies and allows for longer usage. The neck and sleeve openings seem to be just about the right size and the rest of the sleep bag seems non-restrictive, as most babies seem to prefer.
Design and Features
One of the reasons why many are drawn to Wee Urban is their beautiful designs. We have a hard time picking our favorite because all are so adorable, but if it had to be one, probably the green owls design. You won’t find pink or blue as Wee Urban wants to keep the colors gender-neutral. The overall quality of the product looks and feels top-notch but it’s a bit disappointing to know it’s imported from China. Other brands do it but they are typically much larger. A good “made in the USA” alternative would be the one Swaddle Designs makes.
One feature that’s very unique in sleep sacks is the double-zipper which allows unzipping/zipping from the top and/or bottom. Once you’ve tried it, you don’t want to use another sack’s zipper. It’s also one of the smoothest we’ve tried with no snagging. A built-in zipper cover avoids any scratches or zipper chewing.
What We Like
- 2-way zipper is awesome
- Stylish gender-neutral designs
- Soft, sweatshirt-like feel
What We Don’t Like
- No snaps on shoulders
- Made in China
- Might be too long for some babies
Overall, we do like the Wee Urban Cozy Basics sleep bag as it is a good medium warmth sack that can be used in almost all climates, has great designs, and probably the best zipper in the industry. Its main competition seems to be the Baby Deedee which is thicker but also available in a Lite version for warmer months. Because of the beautiful, modern, gender-neutral prints, the Wee Urban sleep sack makes for a fantastic baby shower gift, especially when the sex of the baby is not yet known.
